Bursitis is a painful condition that occurs when the small, fluid-filled sacs—called bursae—that cushion your joints become inflamed. Understanding the anatomical source of this inflammation is the first step toward reducing joint friction and reclaiming your range of motion.

At Pain Treatment Specialists, we use an academic care model to address the complexities of bursa inflammation. By combining precision diagnostics with minimally invasive interventional care, we help our patients resolve joint pain and return to an active life without surgery.

What is Bursitis?

Bursitis is the inflammation of a bursa, a thin sac filled with synovial fluid that acts as a cushion between bone and surrounding soft tissues like tendons and muscles. These sacs are located near major joints such as the hips, shoulders, elbows, and knees, where they reduce friction during movement. When a bursa becomes irritated—usually due to repetitive motion, prolonged pressure, or sudden injury—it swells and produces excess fluid. This inflammation makes joint movement painful and can lead to significant stiffness and localized tenderness.

The primary challenge of bursitis is that it often mimics other joint conditions, such as tendinitis or arthritis. At Pain Treatment Specialists, we view bursitis as a clinical issue that requires diagnostic precision. Our board-certified physicians use ultrasound and physical exams to visualize the inflamed bursa and differentiate it from deeper structural joint damage. This clarity allows us to develop a treatment plan that targets the specific sac causing the discomfort, rather than applying a generalized approach to joint pain.

Common Symptoms and Locations

The symptoms of bursitis typically include a dull ache or stiffness in the affected joint, which often intensifies during activity or when applying direct pressure. Common sites include the lateral hip (trochanteric bursitis), the tip of the shoulder (subacromial bursitis), and the elbow. In some cases, the skin over the inflamed bursa may feel warm to the touch or appear slightly red. Because bursitis pain can radiate, it is often confused with nerve issues; however, bursitis is strictly a soft-tissue inflammatory response that restricts the smooth gliding of tendons over bone.

If left unaddressed, chronic bursitis can lead to a cycle of secondary pain. As you unconsciously change the way you move to avoid irritating the inflamed bursa, you place undue stress on other muscles and joints. Our academic approach focuses on breaking this cycle early. By mapping your symptoms to the exact bursa involved, we can intervene with medical strategies that neutralize the inflammatory response. This provides the symptomatic relief necessary to begin functional rehabilitation and restore your natural gait or throwing mechanics.

Non-Surgical Treatments for Bursitis

Modern interventional medicine offers highly effective non-surgical pathways for resolving bursitis. Ultrasound-guided bursa injections are a primary clinical tool, used to deliver powerful anti-inflammatory medication directly into the inflamed sac with microscopic precision. This treatment rapidly reduces swelling and “shuts off” the pain signals at their source. For patients with recurring bursitis, we may also utilize aspiration to remove excess fluid from the sac, immediately relieving the internal pressure that causes discomfort during movement.

Once the acute inflammation is managed, we prioritize functional stabilization to prevent the condition from returning. This includes correcting the mechanical imbalances—such as poor posture or muscle weakness—that caused the bursa to become overloaded in the first place. At Pain Treatment Specialists, our goal is to provide a comprehensive, non-invasive alternative to traditional orthopedic surgery. If you are looking for a definitive solution to bursitis pain, a professional diagnostic workup at our clinic is the most reliable first step toward a life free from joint inflammation.
